Why do we need them (besides the obvious ones ofcourse)? The obvious rules being: Don't kill (randomly just for the sake of it), Don't steal, Don't lie, etc...
Other than those obvious main ones, why the heck are there so many rules in life? Seriously think about it, every single aspect of our life is controlled by some sort of rule. So many food rules telling us what we should and shouldn't eat, what proportions to eat, what to avoid... Why can't I just eat! There are a ton of fashion rules that people are generally expected to follow... what if I wanted to wear my big fuzzy socks with a formal ball gown and leather jacket? Why should I be judged?? Even typing this blog right now, there are about a million spelling, grammar, and structure (possibly even topical) rules that I should be "abiding by" in order to fully be accepted in society. Why??
Well, rules are meant to be broken right? Technically speaking, there is a time and a place for everything. But who is doing all of the deciding and subsequent shunning (often involving punishment)? I suppose what has sparked this super interpretable and extremely open ended subject in my head, is the recent RULING about marriage being legal for all different kinds of people in all the states. Who made up all these marriage rules to even begin with? And why is it all so darn technical? Whatever your opinion may be, the debate is definitely wide spread enough for you to have one. For this to be a "free country", we sure don't seem to be that free. it feels very restricted some times. Why can't we all just do what the heck we wanna do? If it doesn't hurt anyone that is. How is someone else getting married gonna hurt, or even affect ME at all? The point is, it won't. Just like me typing a misspelled word every now and then PROBABLY won't result in any deaths.
I just think that the world today has become so obsessed with rules, restrictions, and guidelines about how we SHOULD be living... to the point where we forget to actual live! Even rules of simple physics... gravity even. If there hadn't been someone to challenge the idea of flying, we'd all be taking that week long journey sailing across the Atlantic to Europe instead of a 6 hour flight. Even with my writing, I still like to challenge all of the rules. I like to find ways to make my writing different from typical writing styles (for example, I use so many darn parenthesis! I'm not even sure I should be, but I do anyway, so suck it English language!)
The purpose of this blog today is not to say go out and commit a bunch of victimless crimes, so don't get it twisted ya heathens! I just really believe that the technicalities of modern society are overcomplicating the simplicity of life much more than necessary... and also stifling our creativity with impeding legal limitations. Rules, or guidelines as I like to call them, are set in place for the millions and billions of people on this earth. There would be complete chaos if everyone just went around doing whatever the heck, ya know? Generally speaking, people don't like to really think for themselves too much, so I suppose the rules are there so we can be safe even when we aren't really thinking about cataclysmic consequences. Just like sometimes children need a few rules to abide by before they really know any better about anything. But don't stay a child for too long people. Expand your mind and learn about the rules you are expected to follow. Some really need to be revisited.
We all want to live in a world where right is right and wrong is wrong with no grey in between, but the point is, everything is all grey (insert 50 shades joke)! It's ok to follow the general guidelines without being mindless drones. Life gets a little messy sometimes. It wouldn't be life if everything was all cookie cut out. The best things can happen when the rules are bent and broken. Don't be so uptight and let others live and be messy on their own.
Who wants to live in a world where you get ticketed on the subway because you spread your legs too wide? Don't get me wrong, it is kind of annoying, and there is a thing called common freakin courtesy, but to get a ticket for such a small thing? I personally have even gotten a ticket for spitting into the tracks. Spitting people. Get outta my FACE!
So... what is the number one rule YOU live by?
p.s. Even though I don't understand some rules, Law and Order SVU is still like the greatest show everrrrr!
p.p.s. I may have mentioned this in another post, but I actually really wanted to be a lawyer growing up (I love to argue, who knew!), but after learning about all the technicalities of the system... all of the societal rules, I figured that even if a person was completely guilty, based on some stupid rule (such as an illegal search or something), they could get off scotch free! I just can't be a part of that...
p.p.p.s. While researching how long it would take to sail the Atlantic to Europe, I discovered the best cruise ever! 98 nights from Southhampton to Dubai, traveling through 8 different countries. Who can I borrow 13g's from??
